For vocabulary it is the only way. Using visuals or helping students with visualization to make them understand and "translate" the concept in their mind is the only way.

Mixing in all senses might help Seems to me learning a language would always involve the ears. You say it. You look at it. You hear it. You write it. A clever mix would probably get the best results.
