Safe Passage works with the poorest at-risk children of families working in the Guatemala City garbage dump. Within a safe and caring environment, we provide a comprehensive and integrated program that fosters hope, good health, educational achievement, self-sufficiency, self esteem and confidence.
English Teachers: Guatemala City Educational Reinforcement Center:
The person in this position has the responsibility to teach English to all grade levels from kindergarten to early high school.
Principal duties include:
• Lesson planning, making props, testing, etc.
• Working with classroom volunteers to help teach lessons
• Tutoring students/staff/administration one on one and in small groups
• Coordinating extracurricular activities
• Creating creative and innovative ways to motivate students to learn English
Skills and experience required for this position include:
• Strong speaking and writing skills in English and Spanish or desire to take classes prior to starting.
• Certified in TEFL or ESL
• Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills
• Patience and ability to work with children from homes with little or no parental guidance.
• Strong organizational skills
• Experience teaching or working with school age children (Ages 5-19)
This position is a long-term position and would require the volunteer to make at least a six-month commitment to the organization. The training period for this position is on-going.
