Job Description

Prince Sultan College, a part of the King Fahad Military Medical Complex, continues to seek English instructors. We hire throughout the year whenever there is a need, not just for the start of a semester or an academic year. We have openings for the new academic year.

The English instructor applicant should have:

• A Master’s Degree in Linguistics, ESL or English. Or a BA with an ESL/ CELTA teaching certificate if no MA.

• A minimum of 3 years teaching experience overseas. Saudi experience is a plus.

• Curriculum development/ materials writing experience.

• Flexibility in the job place.

(To those who have recently taught in Saudi Arabia, the Letter of No Objection is NO LONGER needed if we are hiring you from outside the country.)

Our Pre Clinical English program is two semesters of preparation for students to enter our Clinical Studies programs where students study specific health science professions.

******IMPORTANT: Instructors must be NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH, meaning Americans, Canadians, British, Irish, South Africans, Australians and New Zealanders only. The College cannot hire those who are not. Instructors must be single or single status. No married housing is allocated to the English Department at this time. We have no openings for female teachers.

There are NO EXCEPTIONS to these points. CVs/Resumes of those applicants who do not meet these requirements will be deleted and receive no reply.

KFMMC/PSCHS provides the following benefits to all employees:

• Salary for instructors starts at 10,000 SR a month (US$ 33,000 per annum) with yearly increases of 400 SR a month. This salary is currently being reviewed and hopefully will be adjusted upwards. All salary is tax free. There was a 5% per month inflation raise added to the salary in 2008, and another 5% in January 2009. 5% more will be added in Jan 2010.

• End of service bonus of 2 weeks salary for every year up to five; 4 weeks salary for every year after five, calculated on final salary.

• Annual round trip airplane ticket to point of hire if contract is renewed; college, of course, provides free initial airplane ticket and final ticket for everyone.

• Free health care at KFMMC hospital and College Employee Health Clinic.

• Single occupancy studio/bed sit apartment rent-free with free utilities. Telephone provided; you pay only for long distance calls. (DSL Internet and Satellite TV are available for a monthly fee paid directly to private companies).

• Staff cafeteria at the hospital, open to all College employees. Breakfast, lunch and limited dinner menu. Prices are low.

• Vacation leave of 49 days a year. Vacation leave is counted every time you leave the country (except weekends in Bahrain).

• Multiple exit/ re entry visas can be issued after 3 month Probationary period is passed - 6 month visas with unrestricted number of exits/re entries. Weekend visits to Bahrain are possible.

ALL APPLICANTS MUST GO THROUGH THE HIRING PROCESS IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY. NO HIRING FROM A THIRD COUNTRY CAN BE CONSIDERED. VISA IS ISSUED THROUGH SAUDI ARABIAN EMBASSY IN APPLICANT’S HOME COUNTRY. FOR UK APPLICANTS, THEY ARE TURNED OVER TO OUR RECRUITING AGENCY IN LONDON WHICH HANDLES THE HIRING (AT NO COST TO THE APPLICANT).

The above point is especially true for American applicants. The medical exams must be done in America by a licensed American doctor. If not, the US Department of Health will not certify them, and then the Saudi Arabian Embassy in the US will not accept them.

KFMMC does not participate in one month visitor visas for instructors. All instructors enter on a 3-month visa. During that time there is a probationary period, and no one can take vacation time until the probation period finishes and residency visas are issued. Leave time is then granted during appropriate periods when the college is in recess. Teachers are employed for a 12-month contract and still have duties in the summer months unless they take leave.

English instructors, please email your CV and relevant documents (degree copies, ESL/ CELTA certificate copy, photo page of passport, no letters of recommendations needed at this time) to the KFMMC English Department for forwarding to Personnel Department (HUMAN RESOURCES).

When considering where in the world you want to teach English, the big 3 for ESL/EFL/TEFL jobs are:

Asia: Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia are the popular spots because they have so many ESL/EFL/TEFL jobs available. In addition, there are always positions coming up infrequently in places like Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia though you must be a qualified teacher to obtain these. You may even find positions for Cambodia and Laos but you should look at the reputation of ESL/EFL/TEFL schools carefully due to lack of a solid legal system for recourse.

Europe: Everyone dreams of teaching English in Greece, Italy, France or Spain but unless you are an European Union (EU) citizen it is difficult to obtain these teaching positions. The more frequent ESL/EFL/TEFL jobs are available in Eastern Europe in places like Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine and Russia. These positions don\'t pay very well by western standards but they provide a lot of opportunity for travel while not teaching.

The Middle East: Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE) are the most common with Bahrain, Yemen and Qatar occasionally having ESL/EFL/TEFL job openings. Now there are also more teaching positions available in Iraq. The Middle East is popular for the money paid for teaching positions but don\'t expect much of a social life due to cultural restraints.
