Foundation Integrated Skills / Post-Foundation Undergraduate English

Full-time, 3-year contract, renewable


The Mission of the Qatar University Foundation Program English Department is to develop students' English language proficiency to a level that will allow them to gain entry to and succeed in the academic programs offered by the colleges at Qatar University. The Program also aims to help students achieve academic readiness by equipping them with skills such as independent learning, critical thinking and the appropriate use of information and communication technology as a learning tool.


The Foundation Program English Department at Qatar University is currently recruiting resourceful, culturally sensitive, academic professionals seeking creative input within a diverse EFL/EAP faculty, commencing early September, 2010. Responsibilities include teaching up to 18 contact hours per week in the Foundation multi-level integrated skills program or the Post-Foundation Undergraduate English program (additional hours as paid overtime); contributing to and participating in curriculum and program development; e-learning; testing and assessment; and student advising and support activities.


Required qualifications and experience:

A Master's degree in TESOL, ELT or Applied Linguistics, from a reputably accredited university/program with at least two years' EAP/EFL/ESL teaching experience at university/ tertiary/adult-level (overseas experience is desirable). Knowledge of best teaching practice is essential, as are experience in testing and assessment, instructional technology, and curriculum and materials development. The ability to adapt to and participate in different cultures and learning environments, and to contribute to an innovative and challenging academic instructional program is an asset.


Salary and Benefits:

*Competitive, monthly tax-free starting salary (free of local taxes) commensurate with qualifications and experience with Qatar University employment performance-based annual increments.

*Teaching load of up to 18 hours per week with additional hours as paid overtime.

*Funded professional development opportunities, including international conference participation/presentation, are available subject to QU policies and regulations.

*Furnished accommodation (subject to QU Housing Department regulations); utilities are at the employee's expense.

*Annual air tickets for the teacher, spouse, and up to three children under 18 years of age accompanying employee to Qatar.

*End-of-service gratuity based on the last month's basic salary as governed by QU policies and regulations.

*Public health care and health-care insurance coverage for the employee and eligible dependents.

*Paid annual leave of about 60 days and additional government/university holidays (approximately 5 weeks in the Academic Year 2010/2011 QU calendar).

*Shipping allowances for unaccompanied luggage not exceeding 300 kgs (660 lbs) for the employee and 200 kgs (440 lbs) for the spouse, provided that supporting invoices are submitted.

*Educational allowances for three children from primary through secondary education (up to the age of 18) at schools in Qatar where English is the medium of instruction.

*Interest-free car loan repayable in monthly installments over the length of the contract.

Asia: Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia are the popular spots because they have so many ESL/EFL/TEFL jobs available. In addition, there are always positions coming up infrequently in places like Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia though you must be a qualified teacher to obtain these. You may even find positions for Cambodia and Laos but you should look at the reputation of ESL/EFL/TEFL schools carefully due to lack of a solid legal system for recourse.

Europe: Everyone dreams of teaching English in Greece, Italy, France or Spain but unless you are an European Union (EU) citizen it is difficult to obtain these teaching positions. The more frequent ESL/EFL/TEFL jobs are available in Eastern Europe in places like Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine and Russia. These positions don\'t pay very well by western standards but they provide a lot of opportunity for travel while not teaching.

The Middle East: Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE) are the most common with Bahrain, Yemen and Qatar occasionally having ESL/EFL/TEFL job openings. Now there are also more teaching positions available in Iraq. The Middle East is popular for the money paid for teaching positions but don\'t expect much of a social life due to cultural restraints.
