Every year International House prepares more candidates worldwide than any other organisation for Cambridge ESOL Certificate (CELTA) and Diploma (DELTA) in English Language Teaching to Adults and the Young Learner Extension Certificate (CELTYL).

International House developed the first training courses for teachers of English and has continued to innovate both in pre‐service training and teacher development. Globally, the language teachers that we train are acknowledged as amongst the most able, creative and authoritative within their profession. Our teacher training programmes are a hallmark of excellence and outstanding professionalism.

The Teacher Training Department at Accademia Britannica – International House in Rome started more than thirty years ago to cater mainly to the needs of the local International House Schools. It expanded, however, to become the largest in Italy, in response to the growing demand for training courses in both State schools and private institutions. In 1997 the Department was one of the first in the world authorised by University of Cambridge ESOL to pilot their new Extension Course for Teachers of Young Learners.All the Teacher Trainers at our centre have a wide range of teaching and training experience, both in Italy and abroad, and are actively engaged in day‐to‐day English language teaching. Many of the Trainers are also Cambridge ESOL examiners and assessors. Our current training team includes trainers from Britain, Ireland and Australia as well as guest trainers who come from experienced training centres abroad.

CELTA ‐ Cambridge ESOL Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, is the most widely recognised initial professional qualification. The course provides initial training in English Language Teaching to Adults but will also suit those who are already in the profession but who have no formal or practical qualification.

Each course is approved by University of Cambridge ESOL and satisfies the CELTA regulations and requirements that ensure that courses:

  are delivered by Cambridge ESOL‐approved staff with the relevant experience and training;


• 
  provide tutorial guidance, support and feedback for all candidates, for both teaching practice and written work;


• 
  include a minimum of 120 hours contact with course tutors including individual tutorials;


• 
  provide 6 hours directed observation of experienced teachers and 6 hours assessed teaching practice;


• 
  are delivered in approved premises and with full access to the required resources;


• 
  maintain and provide course records and provide candidate records;


• 
  observe local laws regarding staff employment and copyright;


• 
  provide candidates with full information regarding candidate enquiries on results and complaints procedure.

Applicants must have a good standard of education equivalent to that required to enter university or college, have a standard of English equal to that of an educated native speaker and be at least 20 years of age.

Applicants are accepted on completion of a successful interview. Telephone interviews can be arranged for candidates living outside Italy.
