US K-12 teaching requirements for TESOL/Bilingual Education
I was wondering if any U.S. ESL/Bilingual Ed teachers could give me some advice. I previously did a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Mexico, and now I'd like to teach ESL in the U.S., preferably at the K-12 level. However, I did not get an education degree. My question is, should I do just an alternative certification program to be able to teach, or a Master's program that leads to teaching licensure at the end? I have heard it is dangerous to have your Master's when first applying for teaching jobs, but some of the just licensure programs I've been looking are nearly the same length or really the same length as a Master's program. I just find myself a little lost. Thank you in advance!!

I would say the decision is really a persnal preference but, in my opinion, the Masters of Education is the way to go. A Masters will also allow you to be eligible for promotions, etc. For more advice, you can also ask teachers at our group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/esljobs/
